Natural history & care

Research-backed context for long-term aquarium care.

Lifespan Not yet documented
Diet type Omnivore
Minimum aquarium volume 450 L
Minimum footprint 150 × 60 cm
Accepted scientific name Baryancistrus xanthellus
Alternative names Gold Nugget Pleco, Golden Nugget Pleco, L018, L085, L177
Native range
Brazil, Rio Xingu and Iriri system.
Natural habitat
Rocky, warm, strongly oxygenated Xingu habitat. Requires powerful filtration, high oxygen, substantial current and numerous rock/wood retreats. Heat plus low oxygen is a major risk.
Diet & feeding
Aufwuchs grazer with a strong plant/algal component but also takes invertebrate material. Feed varied algae-rich wafers, vegetables and moderate protein foods. Ensure food reaches the fish after lights-out if needed.

Breeding & sexing

Research-backed guidance for identifying sexes and reproductive behaviour.

Sexing
Mature males generally develop stronger odontodes and broader heads; females are typically rounder when mature.
Breeding
Cave-spawning loricariid; males guard eggs in enclosed sites. Captive breeding is possible but adult size and territoriality demand substantial space.
